New Caledonia is an island archipelago about 750 miles east of the eastern coast of Australia. It is a fragment of the ancient super-continent of Gondwana, like Madagascar. Its flora and fauna have evolved in isolation from the rest of the world for tens of millions of years.
That flora includes some of the most highly prized palms in the world.
Many New Caledonian palms will grow well in Southern California. These include: Chambeyronia, Burretokentia, and Basselinia.
So, we in the PSSC care about New Caledonia and its palms very much.
